Burnett has worked at the paper since 2005.
On his Twitter page Burnett describes himself as a "columnist, reporter and blogger for The Miami Herald and MiamiHerald.com on the topics of crime, pop culture, diversity, and politics."
His final day at the Herald has not been announced.
