The way we were... Key West 'secedes' from the U.S., 1982

30 years ago this week...Key West "secedes" from the United States and renames itself the Conch Republic.

    I remember my grandmother calling the Key West Post Office to see if they were issuing Conch Republic Stamps. Apparently, the postmaster laughed so hard he dropped the phone. And then replied that no, they weren't issuing stamps "at this time."
